How to use an Epi-Pen and Warnings

Administering an Epi-pen injection and warnings

If a person is having an anaphylaxis shock reaction and can’t administer the injection, it is important for all your family and friends to know how to administer it for you in case you can’t.  Make sure they know where to find your EpiPen.  Then go to the emergency room of the nearest hospital after the injection has been administered!

Warnings:

  • Never put thumb, fingers, or hand over the black tip.  The needle comes out of the black tip.  Accidental injection into hands or feet may result in loss of blood flow to these areas.  If this happens go immediately to the nearest emergency room.
  • EpiPen and EpiPen Jr should only be injected into the outer thigh
  • Do NOT remove the gray safety release until ready to use.
  • Immediately after Use it is vital you/they go to the emergency room for further monitoring and medical attention.

Directions for Use/Administering the injection

  • Unscrew the yellow or green cap of the EpiPen or EpiPen Jr carrying case and remove the EpiPen auto-injector from its storage tube.
  • Grasp unit with the black tip pointing downward
  • Form fist around the unit (black tip down)
  • With your other hand pull off the gray safety release
  • Hold black tip near the outer thigh
  • Swing and jab firmly into the outer thigh until it clicks so that the unit is at a 90 degree angle to the thigh.  Note the injector will work through clothing.
  • Hold firmly against thigh for approximately 10 seconds.  The injector window on the auto injector will show red once the medication is discharged.  There will still be some medication left in the auto injector as the injector does not fully dispense all of it.  That is okay.
  • Remove unit from thigh and massage injection area for 10 seconds
  • Call 911 and seek medical attention immediately
  • Carefully place the used auto injector into the case. Needle end first, and don’t bend the needle.  Screw the cap back on the storage tup and take it with you to the hospital emergency room.
